There are thousands of moving parts in a piano and it is important to keep all of those moving parts functioning properly so that pianists can control their playing. When any of those parts stick, jam or break, a repair is needed. Sometimes the repair consists of just repairing the particular part while other times the part may need to be replaced.
Most piano repairs can be done on location. Larger repairs such as repairing soundboards, repinning or restringing a piano need to be done in a repair shop.
Keytops are sometimes discolored, chipped or cracked. The repair of those kinds of conditions would also be done in the repair shop.
